WILTSEY AVID STUDENTS GO TO COLLEGEUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On Friday, February 17, seventh and eighth grade Wiltsey AVID students took a field trip to Cal Poly Pomona. For many of the students, this was the first time they had stepped upon the campus of this local treasure. Students took an extensive guided tour that led them through the main campus. Highlights included the college library, student union, and a visit to the dormitories. After the ninety minute walk, the students ate lunch at the Los Olivios Dining Commons where they got to pick from an extensive buffet menu that included burgers, sandwiches, hot entrees, Mexican food, and all types of cool beverages and deserts. Finally, the AVID students were treated to a unique feature at Cal Poly - the Arabian horse stables. The guide told the story of the Kellogg brothers (yes, the Corn Flake guys) and how Cal Poly's state charter calls for the upkeep of these beautiful animals. AVID is a special program that keeps the goal of attending a college the center of each student's middle and high school focus.

Science Month at Wiltsey Middle SchoolUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On December 5, astronomers introduced a newly discovered planet that seemed habitable for extraterrestrial life. The faraway world is an exoplanet, or planet outside our solar system, called Kepler-22b. It looks E.T.-friendly because its temperature is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water, which is essential to life as we know it. The planet orbits its star at just the right distance, sometimes called the “Goldilocks” zone. 1

On December 5, Wiltsey families participated in Space Science Night. They created a planisphere, built and launched rockets, weighed themselves on other planets, and calculated how many days it would take to travel to the planets on the Space Shuttle while sampling astronaut food!  Soon, constellations were identified, craters created, and our adventurous future-scientists visited ‘outer space’ via the Star Lab. The Pomona Valley Astronomy Club brought out high power telescopes to give us an ‘up-close-and-personal’ view of the moon, Jupiter, and the ET and Snowball star clusters. Amazing doesn’t begin to describe our evening of adventure and fun filled activities. The evening culminated in a raffle for out of this world prizes including two telescopes.

Continuing in the Science Month tradition, Wiltsey’s Science Fair was also in December with over 450 science project entries. Families came in the evening to view the multipurpose room filled with a myriad of projects and awards were given out. What a spectacular event this was! Check out the Science Fair winners.

Wiltsey AVID "Making a Difference"Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On Saturday, September 17, 2011 over fifty Wiltsey AVID students, staff, and parent volunteers drove to Big Bear Lake to take part  in the annual California Coastal Clean-Up Day. Students from Mrs. Yvette Puebla's seventh grade AVID class and Mr. Ken Aven's eighth grade AVID class gave up their weekend to help pick trash and lead efforts to keep the shoreline of Big Bear Lake pristine and clean for the residents of the area and for the thousands of visitors to this famous recreation area. Donning gloves and carrying large plastic bags, the students spent the entire morning walking along the edges of the lake picking up loads of trash. As a reward for their efforts, the students were given a one hour cruise of Big Bear Lake on one of the local tour ships. AVID, along with the Wiltsey International Baccalaureate focus, are programs designed to teach students the skills needed to achieve in school and qualify for college acceptance, and they stress the need to give back to the community as a whole. Although the day was full of both hard work and great fun, the lesson of working together to make a difference will be the main thing these students will have gotten out of their special Saturday at Big Bear.
