Serrano Middle School in the Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) has earned the highest Math scores of all the middle schools in OMSD.  According to the California Standards Test scores Serrano showed major increases in every subject area.

“We are so proud of our students and staff who worked so hard last year to give our scores an incredible boost,” said Leticia Zaragoza, the principal of the school. “Over the last five years our Annual Performance Index increased from 609 to 729, which makes us the second highest middle school in the district. 125 points of growth, that’s amazing.”

Serrano teachers focused on the needs of the students.  “We assess to see where our students are.  Then we provide the instruction they need to succeed.  It really is all about the students,” said Sam Sager, instructional coach.

The hard work of the students and teachers at Serrano is paying off.  Every year for the last decade Serrano has increased its state test scores.

Serrano Middle School has been educating students in the community since 1966.  Serrano has 710 students in grades 7 and 8, and serves a diverse population.  There are 37 highly qualified teachers at Serrano, specifically trained meet the needs of all its students.

Serrano Provides Greater School ExperienceUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Serrano Middle School is offering its students many programs and activities beyond the traditional school day.  Serrano is in the process of restructuring how it provides students opportunities for growth and experience outside of the classroom.

One of the largest differences Serrano students will see is the introduction of an optional seventh period.  Students will be able to participate in Band and Student Leadership without having to compromise their academic schedules during the school day.

Serrano is also is increasing the depth and involvement of many of its student activities.  The Student Leadership class will be actively involved in planning student activities as well as running and managing the student store.  The video editing class will allow students to explore their creative and journalistic sides.

New to this school year, Serrano is rolling out a variety of student clubs including drama, cooking, chess, AVID, Twilight Book Club, Peer Counseling, D.C. Fieldtrip, Recycling, Outdoor Adventure and Science Club, and Girls in Action.

“We want students to think of Serrano as home.  When we make connections to students we see the positive difference it makes,” states Leticia Zaragoza, principal.
