Enter Montera’s computer lab any Tuesday after school, and you will see the lab fill quickly to capacity with 1st through 6th graders, along with some parents, grandparents and younger siblings. Once the Accelerated Reader Club is in full swing, students can be seen reading, taking AR quizzes, listening to a teacher read aloud, and building their reading skills on the Lexia Reading online program. After 45 minutes, the students head for home, while a second session begins for those in the after-school program. In all, about forty Montera Eagles participate each week in the AR Club.

Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit recently graced the stage at Montera Academy of Academic Exploration, along with many of the other well-known characters from Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Professional actors from the Will & Co. theater group brought the story to life, with help from twelve students who donned costumes, learned a few lines, and became part of the onstage action. The PTA has been hard at work in order to provide this opportunity, and many other enriching experiences, to Montera students.

Montera Academy of Academic Exploration treated their student body to a Kick-Off Assembly in anticipation of the upcoming STAR Test. Every student was given a colorful pom-pom to use as they sang the school song and participated in a creative chant that was written by the Student Council. Montera Principal, Mr. Bruce Lauria, pledged that he would do something special at an upcoming assembly after testing if all students gave a 100% effort on the state test. In the past, Mr. Lauria kissed a goat, rode a razor scooter around the campus while dressed up as Dr. Testwell, a mad scientist, and has given students the opportunity to throw pie in his face. This year, the students were all given a Principal’s Pledge form to come up with their own creative idea for the principal to showcase after testing has been completed. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

The discipline committee would like to let you know about something new! We've been working hard to organize a special event for the students who have not received any behavior tickets during 1st trimester.
We will be hosting a Minute to Win It assembly! Maybe you've watched the show on TV before? Students will be racing to compete wacky challenges in one minute using household items. For example, ever tried to move a cookie from your forehead to your mouth using only the muscles in your face? (No hands!) That's just one game we'll be doing. There lots more that we have planned using noodles, cups, balloons, and more.
Remember, only the students who have not received any behavior tickets will be invited. Stay tuned to find out more!
