Assembly member Norma Torres Visits 6th Grade students at Mariposa

Body

Inspired and motivated are the two words that best describe the way the 6th grade students in Mrs. Browning’s Math class felt after hearing Assembly member Norma Torres speak to them on Friday February 3rd.  Mrs. Torres, who represents District 61 and is the former mayor of Pomona, took time out of her very busy schedule to speak with the students about the value of education and the opportunities it will create for them.  Her talk was personal and informal which kept the students glued to her every word for about an hour.  The students used this opportunity to ask Mrs. Torres about her involvement in politics. She told the kids that it is not easy, but the only way things will change is by becoming involved and educated.  Her journey began many years ago when she worked as a 911 Operator in Pomona and felt the need to change hiring practices to include being bilingual as a requirement.   “You need an education so that when you are ready for the workforce you can have choices and get paid from the ‘neck up’.”  She explained that the more education they have, the more opportunities they will have to choose to work in the things that interest them.
