Howard School Third Graders Win Big!!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Early this school year Mrs. Sharon Felton's third grade class at Howard caught the California Dairy "Real Seal Appeal" bug and busily collected 100 seals from milk cartons.  The seals were sent into the contest, sponsored by Scholastic, and last month the class was notified that they had won a second prize in the drawing!  This awesome honor not only garnered Mrs. Felton with a $25 gift card to Staples and a free book for each child in the class, but also brought a generous prize of $9,500.00 to the school.  The money comes to the school at a terrific time and will be used to purchase books, technology upgrades and tech site licenses.  The entire school community is thankful for this amazing prize and thanks these special third grade students and their teacher!!  Pictured is Mrs. Felton (holding the check!!) along with her class.

Montclair Boy Scout Helps His Elementary School with a New FlagUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Last month former Howard student Kevin Neuer visited Howard School and asked Mrs. Lipschultz if he could get Howard a new US flag.  She was delighted at the offer and said yes.  Kevin, a sophomore at Montclair High School and a Boy Scout, has a love for his country and demonstrated his patriotism in an amazing way by collecting cans and bottles to raise the money needed to purchase a beautiful 5' x 8' flag for his former elementary school.  He presented it to Mrs. Lipschultz at Howard on Monday afternoon.  When Kevin attended Howard he had perfect attendance for all of his K-6 school career and his mom says he still maintains perfect attendance for his K-10 career so far!!

This is not Kevin's first flag donation.  He already donated a flag to EJ Marshall School as well as to Montclair Fire Station #2.  Knowing Kevin as an active Boy Scout, Mrs. Lipschultz asked Kevin if he would take Howard's old, tattered flag from her to be disposed of properly.  He happily agreed and explained to the principal that only four groups are allowed to dispose of a flag: the Boy Scouts,  the Girl Scouts, Military Personnel and Retired Veterans.  Kevin explained that he would save this flag for a special flag burning ceremony his troop would have.  Howard School will proudly fly this beautiful and durable flag for years to come!!

 HOWARD STUDENTS GIVE BACK

On Monday, February 6th we will begin raising money again for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with our annual coin drive.  This year we will be participating in the “Pasta for Pennies” program which will provide the winning class with a spaghetti party from the Olive Garden Restaurant.  This worthwhile program provides a service learning project for our students in addition to raising much needed funds for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.  Over the past three years, Howard students have raised over $8,000.00 for this worthy cause!! Please help by sending in your spare change and adding it to your student’s classroom collection box.  Our last collection day will be Friday, February 24th.

College Month - NovemberUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

College Corner

November is College Month at Howard!! This month we will feature the importance of a good education starting in elementary school as an investment in their learning in order to prepare our students to go to college. College is within reach for all of our students and we want to support families in starting that conversation now. Last week, at our October assembly, each staff member introduced themself to the students and shared which college they attended to get their bachelor's degree. Many staff members have additional degrees from other colleges or universities. During November we will spotlight college in a personal way with our kids and begin this critical conversation. In future Howard Highlights you can watch for information about what our kids are learning about college. Start talking to your child today about going to college.

Howard Students Honored for Achievement with Spaghetti Dinner

Howard School's third annual spaghetti dinner was a resounding success!  Over 240 students were invited to bring a parent to a special dinner in recognition for their accomplishments on the 2011 California Standards Test.  Students who scored proficient or advanced in either English Language Arts or Math were served spaghetti, salad, bread and cookies by proud Howard Staff and volunteers from DriveTime.  Each student received a certificate for their accomplishment and group pictures were taken that will be posted on the school's website.  We want to congratulate our students for their hard work every day.  We appreciate the support of our parents and families.  We again want to thank our supportive and generous friends at DriveTime.

Fundraiser - Aug. 29th to Sept. 9thUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Raising Money for Field Trips

Each year Howard asks families to support our Fall Catalog and Cookie Dough Fundraising Effort.  By helping your child to sell these items Howard School is able to make enough money to pay for classroom field trips.  Without fundraising support field trips will  not be available to our students.  Our goal is to raise $6000 to cover the costs of transportation and admission for these trips.  Please do what you can to support this effort.  If we meet our school-wide goal of $6000 in profits, we will earn a fabulous BMX Bike Assembly.  Fundraiser packets came home on August 29th and the sale runs through September 9.  Thank you for your support.

Free Breakfast for Every Child

It is with great pleasure that we announce that this school year all students are eligible to receive breakfast on school days for FREE!  There is no application process necessary to receive free breakfast.  However, in order to receive free or reduced priced lunches, applications must be submitted.  We are excited about ensuring that all Howard’s students eat before going to class to concentrate on learning!

Free-Reduced Lunch:  Students must apply for free or reduced priced lunches this month, even if they qualified last year.  It typically takes 10 days for approval for new applicants.  Applications are available online.

LUNCH MONEY   If you are sending lunch money with your child, please make sure it is in a sealed envelope clearly marked with your child’s first and last name and their lunch number.  Remind students to drop the envelope in the cafeteria in the morning when they arrive at school.
