Howard GATE students visits the "CUBE"Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Eighty GATE students at Howard school visited the Discovery Science Center. The students got the opportunity to explore and participate in many hands on activities, interactive programs and live demonstrations, independently and in small groups.  They particularly enjoyed the cube, where they got the chance to experience a rocket simulation, smoke and all.  Several students visited the featured exhibit, “Animal Grossology,” where they got an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the slimiest, stinkiest and downright yuckiest creatures on Earth through hands-on, interactive displays. Finally, students became research assistants, in search of dinosaur fossils.

Howard After-School Program piloted iPadsUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

This year Howard After-School Program piloted iPads with our students. Each class had one week to learn how to use the tablets and complete curriculum utilizing these resources.

In the Kindergarten/First Grade class they learned about fractured fairy tales by reading aloud a traditional fairy tale.  Afterward students created their own fractured fairy tales by employing the fractured fairy tale tool interactive.  After brainstorming, students performed their new story with puppets.

In the Second/Third Grade class they learned about California gray whales through watching videos on the iPads and then they completed research on specific websites.  At the conclusion, students were filmed delivering a newscast within their groups with the knowledge they gained.

In the fourth through sixth grade classes they learned about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman.  They discovered through narratives and multimedia how songs were important to slaves, and how many times they had ulterior meanings.  In the course of listening to music performed by artists and studying codes and definitions commonly utilized in each piece, students were able to compose their own songs and perform them while being filmed.

All in all, every student was able to apply their newly gained knowledge of the iPad in each project, and was truly excited to learn something new!

As a culminating activity, grade level students raced each other for bragging rights. Damien from Mrs. DeShan's class was the ultimate winner at the 3rd grade level. Kevin from Ms. Cowley's class claimed the 4th grade grade crown.  Jonathan claimed the 5th grade superiority and Lenny was the 6th grade champion.
