Howard After-School Program piloted iPadsUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

This year Howard After-School Program piloted iPads with our students. Each class had one week to learn how to use the tablets and complete curriculum utilizing these resources.

In the Kindergarten/First Grade class they learned about fractured fairy tales by reading aloud a traditional fairy tale.  Afterward students created their own fractured fairy tales by employing the fractured fairy tale tool interactive.  After brainstorming, students performed their new story with puppets.

In the Second/Third Grade class they learned about California gray whales through watching videos on the iPads and then they completed research on specific websites.  At the conclusion, students were filmed delivering a newscast within their groups with the knowledge they gained.

In the fourth through sixth grade classes they learned about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman.  They discovered through narratives and multimedia how songs were important to slaves, and how many times they had ulterior meanings.  In the course of listening to music performed by artists and studying codes and definitions commonly utilized in each piece, students were able to compose their own songs and perform them while being filmed.

All in all, every student was able to apply their newly gained knowledge of the iPad in each project, and was truly excited to learn something new!

On Monday, February 10th Howard School began raising money again for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with our annual coin drive. This year, we will be participating in the "Pasta for Pennies program which will provide the winning class with a spaghetti party from the Olive Garden restuarant. Over the past five years, Howard students have raised over $13,400 for this worthy cause. Please help by sending in your spare change and additing it to your student's classroom collection box. Our last collection day will be Friday, February 28th.

Race Car Building a Hit for Howard GATE Students!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
In December, 73 GATE students from the 3rd - 6th grades at Howard assembled and raced rubber band powered race cars. The GATE students from Mr. Parga's 6th grade class served as cross-age tutors to help facilitate in the construction of the cars.

As a culminating activity, grade level students raced each other for bragging rights. Damien from Mrs. DeShan's class was the ultimate winner at the 3rd grade level. Kevin from Ms. Cowley's class claimed the 4th grade grade crown.  Jonathan claimed the 5th grade superiority and Lenny was the 6th grade champion. All the students were winners in this fun, educational experience!
