Hawthorne School Community Reaches Out to Typhoon Victims

If a silver lining can be found in the disaster visited upon the people in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan, it’s the spirit of giving that was prompted by the students and families of Hawthorne Elementary School. Immediately following the devastation and loss of life that impacted thousands of people, Hawthorne students and their families went into action. It was with empathetic hearts that a school community dug deep into their wallets and coin purses to collect $371.55. Students willingly turned their piggy banks upside down to reach out and help others in need. A check was made out to the American Red Cross earmarked for the Philippine Disaster Fund. This tragedy became an opportunity for our students to learn how to respond in a positive way by helping others in a time of need. There’s the silver lining.

Hawthorne Raises Money To Fight CancerUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

The Hawthorne Elementary school community participated in a program called Pennies for Patients, which is a campaign to collect spare change to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The school goal was to collect $1,000 during the 3-week fundraiser. Students brought home small boxes and searched for spare change around their home, including between sofa cushions, under car seats, and by simply asking family members and friends to donate to this worthy cause. Every day, Hawthorne students would add their donations to their classroom collection box, and the school’s grand total would steadily increase.  It wasn’t long before a healthy competition emerged between classrooms, as the top 3 classrooms were announced each week.

The final day of collection arrived, and the students anxiously awaited news of the school’s grand total.  Through the amazing commitment of Hawthorne students and families, the school raised a total of $4,217.28, quadrupling the original school goal!  The Leukemia and Lymphoma society was thrilled with the effort the students put forward, and presented Hawthorne with a special banner which reads, “Champions of Change” to display proudly on campus. The students and families of Hawthorne are proud of what was accomplished by working together, and feel good knowing that the money collected will make a positive impact on the lives of blood cancer patients.
