Hawthorne Elementary Welcomes #1 New York Times bestselling author, Brandon Mull

Hawthorne International Baccalaureate World School was honored to welcome Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series. He has also earned the bestselling author title for USA TODAY, and The Wall Street Journal for the Five Kingdoms and Candy Shop War series. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students gathered to hear Brandon share his message about how “Imagination Can Take You Places.”  He explained about how a book gets from the imagination, to pencil and paper, to the word processor, to the editor and then published for the public to read.  He encouraged students to pull from their personal experience, add some imagination and create their own stories!  He spoke to them about how important it is to hold onto their dreams, and to not let rejection halt their pursuit of them as he worked many years before he was able to publish his first book.  He commented that, “Sometimes it takes many years, and a lot of patience and persistence before a dream can come true.”

Students were eager to ask questions to which Brandon, kindly answered.  One student asked how Brandon comes up with his characters to which he replied, “As a writer, I try to be a good observer. To tell stories, I need details—physical details for settings and other physical descriptions, as well as a variety of specifics to help my characters seem real. Some of the characters in my books have attributes I’ve noticed in people close to me.”  He then encouraged students to been keen observers of their surroundings, to notice details and then include those things in their writing.

Brandon’s interactive assembly is one that our students will long remember.  At the end of the assembly, he took the time to sign books and take pictures with students and staff.  He left behind the challenge to be voracious readers, to use our imaginations and to dream big and never give up!  Thank you, Brandon Mull!

Hawthorne is the third school in the OMSD IB World Program.

Hawthorne Elementary School students, staff and community have much to celebrate.   Hawthorne has become the third school in the Ontario-Montclair School District to become an International Baccalureate World Programme School.  Bon View Elementary School and Ray Wiltsey Middle recently received authorization as well.
After three years of commitment to developing an instructional program that is rigorous and relevant to the “real” world where learning is not confined within the boundaries of traditional subject areas, Hawthorne has set the bar high in developing students that are destined for success.
