Meet our Grammy Music Educator Award 2014 nominee, Eufemio Escalante!

The GRAMMY and Recording Academy Foundation has published their 222 quarterfinalists for Music Educator Award.  Vina Danks Middle School Teacher Eufemio Escalante has been named a quarterfinalist! There were 7,000 initial nominations from all 50 states. The Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators (K – college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. A joint partnership and presentation of The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation, this special award will be presented at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony during GRAMMY Week 2015.

Mr. Eufemio Escalante began teaching at Vina Danks Middle School over six years ago in the fall of 2008. As a new teacher, his goal was to restructure and expand the music department, taking into account its great past and hoping to expand its future. After a few years of recruiting and bringing the community together, both the bands and orchestras were doubled in size, along with initiating a project with an afterschool mariachi.  Eventually, teachers, students and parent boosters also helped to create the Folklorico of Vina Danks a new dance class.

Mr. Escalante you are a shining star – Congratulations!!

Ontario-Montclair School District's
First Annual Cross Country Event

If you were in the neighborhood of the District office on May 6, 2014, you may have seen 275 students racing through the streets during our inaugural OMSD Cross Country Event.  With the assistance and collaboration of the City of Ontario Public Works and the Ontario Police Department, General and Special Education students in grades 6 - 8 from eight different schools participated in the fabulous 3k race. The day began with a kick-off race for our wonderful OMSD students with special needs.  Students were escorted by District office staff who joined them in the race.     Each one of these students received a medal for completing the course. Four more competitive heats followed the kick-off race.  Medals were presented to the top six finishers in each race.   Overall times were accumulated and Oaks Middle School took first place, Vernon Middle School was awarded second place, while Vina Danks Middle School took home the third place plaque. This fantastic Cross Country Event was coordinated by the OMSD Aspiring Administrators Group Melissa Scotti, Stacia Neer, and Wanda Rhodes, with the assistance of Wayne Bradley. I would like to thank all staff who participated in making this exceptional event a special day for all the students!

Congratulations to Buena Vista Arts-integrated School

Congratulations to Buena Vista Arts-integrated School for receiving the Title I Academic Achievement Award for the 2013-14 school year.  The Title I Academic Achievement Award is given to schools receiving federal Title I funding.  To receive this distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California’s academic content standards.  Additionally, the school’s socioeconomically disadvantage students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.  This is no easy task!!  Congratulations to the hardworking staff and students at Buena Vista Arts-integrated School!!!

  Successful 2nd Annual Poetry Day

OMSD students shined in the limelight as they got on stage and shared their creative works at the Second Annual Poetry Day.  Former OMSD student Brian Oliva served as Master of Ceremonies.  Mr. Oliva, currently teaches poetry at Azusa Pacific University, is also one of the district’s recipients of the Model of Excellence Campaign.  Mr. Oliva brought some talented poets with him who supported the students and shared their poetry with our families.

Additionally, talented poet Antonio Edwards, the 2010 Poet Laureate from Tacoma Washington joined students.  Mr. Edwards is an Inspirational Speaker and writer who came to perform several of his poems and talk individually with students about their poetry.

Over 100 families attend Poetry Day to celebrate our students.  Over 1000 student poems entered were posted in the Multi-Purpose Room at Linda Vista.   Molina Healthcare provided student prize bags for the poetry contest for each of the 50 winners.  Four outstanding Aspiring Administrators took on this project; Vanessa Spencer, Dinae Geer, Kimberly Martindale and Jewel De Souza.  These rising stars have proven to be wonderful, shining examples of talented educators that we are so lucky to have in the wings, as those future administrative opportunities arise.

Best Wishes to County Supervisor Gary Ovitt

In light of San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt’s upcoming retirement, the OMSD Board of Trustees recognized Supervisor Ovitt of his years of community service and for being a role model to the students of the Ontario-Montclair School District. Congratulations and Best Wishes to County Supervisor Gary Ovitt.

RIMS Science and Engineering Fair

On Wednesday evening, April 2nd, 16 projects developed by a total of 20 OMSD students were presented at the RIMS Science and Engineering Fair at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino.  The District is pleased to announce that every project presented received a medal, with 9 bronze medals, 5 silver medals, and 2 gold medals.  The success of our OMSD students speaks volumes about their individual talent, as well as speaks to the excellent teaching and learning taking place in our schools thanks to our amazing teachers.

This year, the RIMS Science and Engineering Fair hosted 837 projects from 4 counties and over 950 individual participants.   OMSD student, Serena Cardona from Edison Academy, not only scored within the top 10% of all projects, she was also selected as an alternate for the California State Science Fair.   Serena is pictured receiving her District medal from Board Vice President Kris Brake.

Congratulations to all participating OMSD students for their accomplishments.  Through hard work and determination, students excelled in this competition and continue to demonstrate the benefits of the world-class education provided in OMSD!

Recognizing our Student Mentors

The Board of Trustees recognized the Student Mentors and the excellent support they provide to our school sites, and most importantly, to our students.  The Student Mentor program was created in 2011, with the primary intent to promote positive relationships and healthy middle school campuses.  The program has grown and expanded to be district-wide.  Schools have experienced increasing attendance while reducing suspensions since the inception of the Mentor program.  Thank you Student Mentors!   Lead West Region Seth Davis and Lead East Region Mike Garcia;  Mentors: Ryan Escalante (De Anza Middle School); Juvenal Castillo (Oaks Middle School); Anthony Ross (Serrano Middle School); Johnny Dukes (Vernon Middle School); Eric Hernandez (Vina Danks Middle School); Christian Vargas-Rojas (Wiltsey Middle School).

OMSD Students Demonstrate Their O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G Skills

OMSD is committed to providing a world-class education to all students; and on Saturday, February 8th, 25 students proudly demonstrated the effects of that commitment at the 6th Annual OMSD Spelling Bee. Oaks Middle School hosted the event which showcased the school site Spelling Bee winners from each of the participating elementary and middle schools in the Ontario-Montclair School District and prepared them for the upcoming Inland Valley Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on March 1, 2014 at Mt. Sac. Following several rounds of a very challenging competition, Guadalupe Garcia, a 6th grade student at Richard E. Haynes Elementary, was named the winner.

OMSD congratulates all of the site winners and cheers them on as they continue on to the Regional Spelling BeeLexy Zamudio (Berlyn), Kyle Aniel (Buena Vista), Nadya Hernandez (Central), Denaja Crenshaw (Corona), Jorge Martinez (De Anza), Andre Jones (Del Norte), James Lindstrom (Edison), Wilson Tupou (El Camino), Samantha Garcia (Hawthorne), Guadalupe Garcia (Haynes), Grace Bui Luu (Howard), Angel Rubio (Kingsley), Marco Garces (Lincoln), Linh Le (Mariposa), Julia Maldonado (Mission), Austin Leong (Monte Vista), Claira Miller (Moreno), Yvania Foley (Oaks), Nancy E. 3rd Annual Ontario-Montclair School District Chess Tournament

The 3rd Annual Ontario-Montclair School District Chess Tournament was quite a success. To prepare for the tournament, students from each elementary and middle school formed chess clubs and held lunch time meetings to learn the rules and strategies of the game. Each school site sponsored its own tournament, and the winners represented their schools at the finals on Saturday, November 16th.

The tournament started with a round of 64 students. The final round was played by master chess players Wes Alameda, seventh grade student at Serrano Middle School; and Quyhn Samreth, a fifth grader from Edison Elementary School. Wes won the final round and was crowned the 2013 OMSD Chess Champion. Sonny Montenez, an eighth grader from Serrano Middle School, and Mario Padilla, a student at Ramona Elementary School, were the third and fourth place winners. Congratulations to all participants!

The Physical Education Department Goes to UCLA

On Saturday, November 2nd, the Elementary Physical Education Department and  Del Norte Elementary School partnered up to attend the "I'm Going to College" event.  Lead teacher Carri Fredericks along with her teaching assistants, Jason Hickman, Jeanne Morales, and Daryl Durston spent the day with 55 Del Norte students and chaperones at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for a college fair and football game.

The event provided a great opportunity to expose our students to university life, as well as a reminder that it's never too early to begin thinking about college.  Students had the opportunity to speak with academic counselors, get autographs from UCLA student-athletes and speak with current UCLA students.  Other college fair activities included carnival games, giveaway items and face painting.

After getting into the UCLA spirit we headed into the stadium to cheer on the Bruins as they defeated Colorado 45-23.

It's Supper Time at OMSD!

On the first day of school 2,500 students at OMSD did something at school they had never done before. They had supper. The Food and Nutrition Services Department is now providing meals to students participating in certain after-school programs. The meals are served right after school before the programs begins so that students are nourished and ready to get started on homework and other learning activities.

OMSD has provided after-school snacks to students for many years. This year the District took advantage of the opportunity to provide suppers of higher nutritional value than the snacks. Students are provided with fruits and vegetables which aligns with the State Superintendent’s “Team California for Healthy Kids” (TCHK) campaign that promotes healthy eating and physical activity through the day.

The menus for the after-school supper program are mostly hot meals and entrees that had not been previously included in the lunch program. This provides variety for the students. The menus for the after-school supper program are available on the District website.
