OMSD Annual Parent Conference

Excitement, gratitude, and harmony are some words shared by parents to describe the atmosphere at the 2012-2013 Ontario-Montclair School District Annual Parent Conference. Over 400 parents, dignitaries, and community partners gathered at the Ontario Convention Center to celebrate “Embracing Our Community, Our Children, Our Commitment”.

The focus was on fostering parent involvement and growing a community of learners and leaders. The intent was to promote both the professional learning community and the family learning community practice, reciprocating the benefits of collaboration to support our students’ achievements. Additional highlights of the event included community vendors providing educational, health and recreational resources, numerous breakout sessions providing capacity building and learning opportunities, and a luncheon showcasing student performances.

The district continues to build positive relationships with families and community partners to support our mission of producing students with a world class education and empowers its stakeholders to cultivate partnerships prepared to thrive in the 21st Century.

OMSD 2013 String Festival

Master violinist and renowned string teacher, Professor Christine Lee of Cal Poly Pomona conducted 100 OMSD string students in the annual Stringfest at Chaffey High School's Gardiner Spring auditorium, on February 13.

Lee quickly grasped the young musicians' attention with her good humor, child-like antics, and virtuosic violin playing. Rhythm, tempo, dynamics, theory, posture, tone production, and group cooperation were some musical concepts that Lee presented in a two-hour rehearsal of music by Handel, and Purcell. Assisting Lee was Cal State Fullerton Music Ed. major, Ms. Taylor Harb (former OMSD student). Ms. Harb demonstrated her cello expertise when she joined Professor Lee, and OMSD teachers David Moody, and Richard Melendrez in a string quartet performance.

Students are presented with these pieces about 3 months before the Stringfest date. Those who show some playing proficiency are chosen to attend the event. You can think of it as a reward for challenging yourself and working hard to learn the objectives. Our hardworking music students are rewarded with a chance to meet 100 students from around the district, and rehearse their music with a master clinician. Twenty-two schools had qualifying students. We are fortunate to have found Christine Lee. Students experienced a joyous event.

Students Match Wit in 2nd Annual Chess Tournament
The District’s 2nd Annual OMSD Chess Tournament took place on February 2, 2013 at the Ontario-Montclair YMCA and featured two students from each of our 32 schools in grades 4th-8th. Chess has been recognized throughout the world as a way to build logical thinking and improve academic performance, and OMSD is proud to offer our students the opportunity to participate in school chess clubs.

The fierce tactical and mental competition started with pool play and culminated into the final four: Charles Bui – Edison; Sonni Montanez – Serrano; Wes Alameda – Moreno; Aaron Apodaca – Edison.

After some tough matches, Wes Alameda was awarded the 2013 championship trophy.

All students demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship and were well supported by their families, friends, and staff. Not only did everyone have fun, but by teaching our students the game of chess they now share a unique bond with other well known players of the game: Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Madonna, John Lennon, Bono, Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Albert Einstein, Edgar Allen Poe, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, Theodore Roosevelt, Isaac Newton, and Christopher Columbus.

The Ontario-Montclair School District will continue to promote the importance of fostering a commitment to our children through partnerships between the school district, families, and the community.
